LINES; Elements of Design

Elements of Design are the fundamental aspects of any visual design which include Shape, Form, Line, Value, and Texture.

Today we will be discussing LINES; The line of a garment makes our eyes fellow a certain direction. These lines can be vertical, horizontal, diagonal or curved, spiral, wavy, cloud, zig-zag, castle, step-up-Ndown, shark, mountain, jagged, walk-around, dashed-dotted, loop-d-loop, these lines can improve body shapes and proportions.

Trims or Trimmings

The materials or components except the main fabric used in the garment are called trims. Besides the main fabric, various additional things are used for making the garment. Trims include Sewing Thread, Buttons, Zippers, Velcro, Label, Shoulder pad, Lining, Interlinings, etc.

Trimmings or Trims are of two types namely Visible trims and Invisible trims. Some trims are used for functional purposes and some are for decorative purposes in garments.

VISIBLE TRIMS; These types of trims can be seen from outside of the garments
e.g. Button, Sewing Thread, Zipper, Velcro, etc.

INVISIBLE TRIMS; These types of trims cannot be seen from outside of the
garments e.g. Interlining

Different Types Of Peplum / Flare and how to calculate them

  • 180 degree or half circle flare is waist divided by 3.14
  • 360 degree or full circle flare is waist divided by 4 or 6.28 to get the radius
  • 720 degrees or full circle multiply by 2; Is divide waist by 2 then answer divide by 4 each to get the radius
  • 1440 degrees or full circle multiply by 4; Is divide waist by 4 then divide the answer by 4 to get the radius of each of them.

At this point, you will have four full circles, join two for the front and the other two for the back.

  1. Umbrella is folded as A-flare then divide by 6.28
  2.  Cone. Depending on how many cones u want
  3. Kissing pleats flare is multiply waist by 3 then divide the answer by 4.
  4. Gathers pleats are; multiply waist by 4 then gather, depending on how full you want the gathers
  5. The gathering is; multiply waist by 3 or more, depending on how you want it.
  6. Knife Pleat is; multiply waist by 3 or more, depending on how you want
  7. Accordion pleat is; multiply waist by 4 or more, depending on how you want
  8. Inverted-Box pleat/multiply by 3 or more, depending on how you want

Getting to know more about Fabrics

A fabric is a material made through weaving,knitting,spreading,crocheting or bonding that may be used in production of garment.

Wool Fabrics

A natural fibre,wool comes primarily from sheep. However, we also get wool fibres from goat (mohair and cashmere).

A wool fibre which is short and fluffy is known as Woolen Yarn.

A wool fibre which is long, strong, and smooth is known as Worsted.

Properties of Wool

It is comfortable to wear in all climates.

It absorbs moisture better than other natural fibres – it will absorb up to thirty percent of its wet before it feels wet.

It can be bleached by sunlight with prolonged exposure.
